6th IBRO School of Neuroscience

8th to 20th August 2005,National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, India

In October 1999, IBRO set up an Annual Neuroscience School in each of 4 regions of the world, viz. Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern/Central Europe. The first four Schools in the Asia-Pacific region were held in Hong Kong in 2000-2004, the fifth School was held in December 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand. In August 2005, the 6th IBRO School of Neuroscience will be held at NCBS in Bangalore, India.

The purpose of the School is to provide a platform for senior PhD students and junior post-doctoral fellows in the Asia-Pacific region to meet in an environment where they can acquire knowledge of both theoretical and technological advances in key areas of neuroscience research. Funding from IBRO will enable about 20 students (from outside India) to attend this 2-week School. The return airfare (home city - Bangalore, India) as well as room and board for the 2 weeks will be provided by the School.
The School in Bangalore will cover lectures, seminars and a variety of laboratory projects. The lectures will cover basic concepts in Neuroscience using vertebrate and invertebrate systems. These will focus on 5 technique-oriented areas in neuroscience. Each student will choose their order of preference for the 5 areas and will be allotted to a particular project. Different laboratories will be used for each area so that students benefit from the range of research facilities available.

Towards the end of the School, there will be a half-day presentation session when students from each group will present the results of their project(s).

The five laboratory modules will be on:

a.. in vitro electrophysiology in various systems
b.. Neurogenetics
c.. in vivo electrophysiology and behaviour in rodents
d.. Molecular neurobiology
e.. Human and vertebrate neuroanatomy
Teachers in the School will be internationally recognized researchers. The
medium of instruction will be in English.

Accommodation:

Students will be provided accommodation at the NCBS Students Guest House on
a room-share basis.
Meals:
All meals will be served at the Cafeteria on the campus. Students and
lecturers will remain as a group for these events.

Who can apply:

Students will be selected on the basis of academic record and research performance and written statements concerning their interest and/or training in neuroscience and why they expect the workshop to benefit their research. Graduate students and post-doctorates with a strong desire to enhance their
proficiency in the areas of the workshop are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants from developing countries. The selection process will be coordinated by the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee.
