5th IBRO School of Neuroscience

Asia-Pacific Region
December 7-18, 2004, Bangkok, Thailand

IBRO expects to sponsor 20-25 students for this program. The potential students of this IBRO School will be senior PhD students and junior postdoctoral fellows. Selected students will be provided with their return airfare as well as room and board for the 2-week period. The selection process will be coordinated by the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee.

IBRO decided in October 1999 to set up an Annual Neuroscience School in each of 4 regions of the world, viz. Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern/Central Europe. The first four Schools in the Asia-Pacific region were held in Hong Kong in 2000-2004. In December 2004, the 5th IBRO School of Neuroscience for the Asia-Pacific region will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The purpose of the School is to provide a platform for senior PhD students and junior post-doctoral fellows in the Asia-Pacific region to meet in an environment where they can acquire knowledge of both theoretical and technological advances in key areas of neuroscience research. Funding from IBRO will enable about 20 students (from outside Bangkok, Thailand) to attend this 2-week School. The return airfare (home city - BKK) as well as room and board for the 2 weeks will be provided by the School.

The School in Bangkok will cover lectures, seminars and a variety of laboratory projects. These will focus on 5 technique-oriented areas in neuroscience. Each student will choose their order of preference for the 5 areas and will be allotted to a particular project. They will attend hands-on workshops in participating universities in the following order: Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University & Srinakarinwirot University.

Different laboratories will be used for each area so that students can benefit from the range of research facilities available. Mini-projects will be introduced in each of the 5 areas with the aim of linking the practical experience in the different laboratories. Towards the end of the School, there will be a half-day presentation session when students from each group will present the results of their project(s).

Teachers in the School will be internationally recognized researchers from the Asia-Pacific region. The medium of instruction will be in English.

During the School, the participants will attend a scientific meeting (10th Annual Conference in Neuroscience of Thai Neuroscience Society; December 13-14, 2004). They will be encouraged to present their own research work in one of the scientific sessions.

Students will be selected on the basis of academic record and research performance and written statements concerning their interest in neuroscience and what they expect to get out of the School. Preference will be given to applicants from developing countries. The selection process will be coordinated by the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee.

Accommodation:
Students will be resident at the Guest House. Two students will be expected to share one room.

Meals:
Breakfast and dinner will be served at the Guest House. Lunch will be served at cafeterias of each university. Students and lecturers will remain as a group for these events.

Transportation:
A bus will be arranged to transport the students and lecturers as a group between the Guest House and each university.
